Smart blinds do not need a hub for basic remote operation. To add app control, voice commands, or smart home routines, the requirements depend on the motor and platform. You may already own the equipment you need: some smart speakers, displays, and home hubs include the required functions.
Start with how you want to control your shades, then check the devices already in your home. This guide focuses on five SmartWings motor options and what each needs for connected control.

What a Hub Actually Does
A hub helps connect your shades to a smart home platform. With Zigbee or Z-Wave, it provides the matching radio connection. A bridge such as Smart Link Pro connects compatible Standard RF motors to supported apps and integrations.
Matter uses two terms worth separating. A Matter controller adds and controls Matter devices within a platform. A Thread border router connects the Thread wireless network to your home network. One device can provide both functions, but a device that supports Matter does not automatically include Thread.
Your usual Wi-Fi router does not replace these functions unless it specifically supports them. Likewise, a PoE switch supplies network connectivity and power; it does not replace a Matter controller.
Choose the Motor Around Your Home
Standard Motor for Remote Control
Choose a Standard Motor if a remote meets your daily needs. For app control or smart home integration later, add a compatible Smart Link or Smart Link Pro hub. For Levitate and Day/Night shades, only Smart Link Pro is compatible.
Zigbee Motor for Compatible Smart Home Hubs
A Zigbee Motor connects through a compatible Zigbee hub. If you already have an Echo with a built-in Zigbee hub, you may be able to pair the shade directly, without buying a separate shade bridge. Check the Echo model rather than assuming every Alexa speaker has Zigbee.
Z-Wave 800 LR for an Existing Z-Wave System
Our current Z-Wave motors use the 800 LR series. They suit homes already using a compatible Z-Wave setup, including supported SmartThings, Hubitat, or Home Assistant configurations.
Operating on a sub-GHz frequency, Z-Wave avoids the busy 2.4 GHz band used by Wi-Fi and Zigbee. To use Long Range mode, your hub and setup must also support LR. Before ordering, confirm compatibility with your hub and chosen shade model.
Matter over Thread for Wireless Smart Home Integration
Matter over Thread is a useful option for finished homes where wireless connectivity fits the installation. It needs a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router, which may be combined in hardware you already own.
For example, a HomePod mini provides both roles for Apple Home. With the required functions in place, you can add compatible SmartWings Matter shades to your platform without a separate SmartWings bridge. Check the exact hub model and software before purchasing.
PoE Matter for Wired Power and Connectivity
If you are building or renovating, consider PoE Matter over Ethernet. One Cat5e or Cat6 cable carries both power and data to a compatible shade. Continuous wired power removes routine battery charging, while Ethernet provides the Matter connection.
This setup needs a PoE switch, network cabling, and a compatible Matter controller. It does not need a Thread border router because the shade communicates over Ethernet. A separate SmartWings bridge is not required for the direct Matter connection.
That makes PoE worth planning for whole-home projects and windows that are difficult to reach for charging. Confirm availability for your chosen shade before specifying cables. Traditional AC or DC power alone does not determine the connection requirements; those still depend on the selected motor.
Start With Your Smart Home Platform
Our Smart Home Systems guide covers the main platforms. Use the overview below to check your connection path before buying additional hardware.
|
Your platform |
Connection options |
What to check |
|
Apple Home |
Matter over Thread or PoE Matter |
Use a compatible Apple home hub. Thread models also need Thread border routing; a HomePod mini combines both roles. |
|
Amazon Alexa |
Matter or Zigbee; Z-Wave through a compatible third-party integration |
Check whether your Echo model has a built-in Zigbee hub or supports Matter. |
|
Google Home |
Matter; other protocols through compatible integrations |
Nest Hub (2nd gen) is an example with Matter and Thread support. PoE Matter needs a compatible Matter controller; Thread support is not required. |
|
Samsung SmartThings |
Matter, Zigbee, or Z-Wave with matching hardware |
Hub capabilities vary. SmartThings Station supports Matter and Zigbee, but does not include a Z-Wave radio. |
|
Home Assistant |
Matter, Zigbee, or Z-Wave with configured integrations |
Run Matter controller software; add Thread border routing for Thread shades, or a matching adapter for Zigbee or Z-Wave. |
|
Hubitat |
Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Matter on supported hubs |
Check the hub model, software, and driver. Matter over Thread also needs a compatible Thread border router. |
|
Homey |
Matter over Thread, Zigbee, or Z-Wave on supported configurations |
Check model and app support. Homey Pro mini needs Homey Bridge to add Z-Wave connectivity. |
These are connection paths, not a guarantee that every motor is available on every shade. Levitate, Day/Night, and specialty products can have different requirements. Check the specific product and any required driver or integration.
Check Before Buying Another Hub
- Choose remote-only operation or the app, voice, and routine features you want.
- Identify your existing hub or controller by exact model and generation.
- Match its Matter, Thread, Zigbee, or Z-Wave capabilities to the selected motor.
- Confirm shade-specific compatibility and plan power separately from connectivity.
One compatible hub can support multiple shades within its capacity and coverage. You do not normally need a separate hub for each window. Use our Smart Technology page to narrow down a setup, or email support@smartwingshome.com with your shade choice, platform, and hub model.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Can I use SmartWings shades without a hub?
Yes. Basic remote operation does not require a smart home hub. For connected control, match the hardware to the motor. PoE shades still need their PoE power connection, even when operated by remote.
Q2: Can I control my shades with my phone or voice?
Yes, with a compatible motor and smart home setup. You can use your platform's app or voice assistant to adjust the shades and run supported routines.
Q3: Will any Amazon Echo work with a Zigbee Motor?
No. Direct pairing requires a supported Echo with a built-in Zigbee hub. Check your Echo's model and generation before ordering.
Q4: How do I choose the right motor for my smart home?
Choose your smart home platform, check your existing hub's capabilities, then select a compatible motor. See our How to Choose Smart Motors guide for help.
Q5: Do I need a separate hub for every shade?
No. One compatible hub can usually control multiple shades. Check its device capacity and coverage when planning your setup.
