Choosing Inside or Outside Mount Smart Blinds

When you decide to take the dive into smart blinds, not only do you need to decide on how you want them to look, but the mount style. At SmartWings, we offer two styles of mount for your motorized blinds, the inside and outside mount. So, which one is for you?

It's important to note that the main difference is what part of the window the smart blinds are attached to. Inside mount blinds will be installed inside the window frame, and outside mount smart blinds will be on the outside of the trim. Other than the physical difference, there are benefits to each style of motorized roller blinds. Let’s look at inside and outside mount smart blinds and which is best for your window.

Inside Mount Smart Blinds

To start, inside mount blinds are, as the name states, installed on the inside of the window treatment. This is the traditional style for the installation of motorized smart blinds. Typically, if there isn’t a way to choose an installation method, it will be the inside mount style. There are many benefits to this style for motorized roller blinds.

First, they are less bulky than an outside mount. If you are installing the blinds in a smaller space, this option won’t protrude into the room at all. It’s also great if you are going for a minimalistic look in your home. They look sleek and are a great choice if you don’t want much attention drawn to the windows.

The inside mount option is also great if you want to show off the window frame itself. The motorized roller blinds will be entirely inside the window frame with an inside mount. So, if you’ve spent a pretty penny on your window frame or you built them yourself, the inside mount is a great option to keep it on display.

Another reason the inside mount is a great choice for your motorized roller blinds is if you plan to add curtains or drapes to them. With the blinds on the inside of the window frame, layering them will be easier.

It's important to note that to utilize an inside mount, your window frame must have enough depth to fit the motorized roller blinds. When purchasing your motorized roller shades, be sure to measure your window and order accordingly for an inside mount. The last thing you want to have happen is your smart blinds arrive and do not fit properly inside your window frame.

Outside Mount Smart Blinds

Outside mount smart blinds are self-explanatory. This style is mounted on the outside of your window frame. Typically, they will be mounted above the window frame or sometimes directly to the outer part of the window.

While the inside mount is a popular option for motorized roller shades, an outside mount has many benefits, as well. For example, you have more freedom with an outside mount. Your motorized roller blinds aren’t restricted to being inside the window frame. If there is an option that doesn’t come in the size you’d like for an inside mount, you can outside mount them. They are also great for windows that aren't deep, since an inside mount requires depth for installation.

If you want your windows to look bigger than they are, outside mount blinds are great at doing this. Another idea is if you have two smaller windows, but the room would look better with one large window, you can order outside mount smart blinds to cover the area. When you do this, it will appear as only one larger window.

Outside mounts also cover more of the window and leave less room for light to leak in. If you are ordering blackout motorized roller blinds, an outside mount will ensure no sunlight. This will not only help you get a good night’s sleep, it will protect your furniture from UV rays.

Not great at measuring? Outside mount smart blinds have much more wiggle room for your windows. They can also be a good choice if you’re ordering motorized roller shades before the actual window is installed, just in case they end up a little different than the initial measurement.

The outside mount is better for a door, too. Your glass door to the backyard won’t have the proper depth for an inside mount, and typically looks better on a door anyway.

If you have window trim you don't like, outside mount blinds are a great way to cover that up, as well. They are also easier to install if you live in a rental and you will need to remove them when you are leaving.
